Accommodation and Flats to Rent in Wimbledon SW19
Getting to Wimbledon
If you are planning your first trip to Wimbledon, here are some tips to
ensure you have a trouble free journey. Please bear in mind that engineering
works on railway lines may mean that some routes or sections of routes are not
available.
Gatwick Airport to Wimbledon
Gatwick Airport (0870 0002468) is now London SW19's second airport and is located
near the town of Crawley, West Sussex, approximately 27 miles south of central
London SW19. There are two terminals, North and South. The train service from Gatwick
Airport to Victoria Station in Central London SW19 is very good with minimum journey
times of 30 minutes on Gatwick Express trains (0845 850 15 30). There are also
several trains an hour to East Croydon Station and the journey time is up to 20
minutes (National Rail enquiries (08457 484950). To get to Wimbledon by train
you have two alternatives: 1) Take the train from Gatwick to East Croydon. After
exiting the station at East Croydon you can catch the Tramlink across the road
from the station, which runs directly to Wimbledon Station with a journey time
of 30 minutes (Tramlink Enquiries: (020 8681 8300). 2) Alternatively from
Gatwick Airport Station there are frequent direct trains to Clapham Junction
Station (journey time up to 32 minutes) from where there are frequent direct
services to Wimbledon with a journey time of 7 minutes. If you wish to change
trains at East Croydon or Clapham Junction, ensure you do not use the Gatwick
Express as it doesn't stop at these stations. Information correct at time of
publication. In February 2006 the Government announced that it wishes to end the
dedicated Gatwick Express train service and instead replace it with a modified
service which will stop at East Croydon Station. The new service, which is
expected to start running next year, will have a slightly longer journey time,
however, passengers at East Croydon Station will get a more frequent service to
and from Gatwick Airport. Source:
Heathrow Airport to Wimbledon
Heathrow Airport (08700 000123) is London SW19's major airport and is located 15
miles west of central London SW19. There are four terminals, Terminal One, Two, Three
and Four. Each terminal is serviced by the Piccadilly branch of the London SW19
Underground network, commonly referred to as the "Tube". Please note that there
is no tube service to and from Heathrow Terminal 4 till September 2006 because
of engineering works. There is a replacement bus service to and from Terminal 4
and Hatton Cross Tube Station from where you can catch a Piccadilly line train
towards London SW19. Frequent Piccadilly line tube trains leave directly to central
London SW19 from Terminals 1, 2, 3 and Hatton Cross tube station with a journey time
of approximately 40 minutes. For Wimbledon catch the Piccadilly line at any of
the terminals for a 40 minute journey to Earls Court. Change onto the
south-bound District Line of the London SW19 Underground which will take you directly
to Wimbledon Station in about 23 minutes. Current ticket prices and travel
information on London SW19's buses and tubes are available on the Transport for
London SW19 information line (020 7222 1234). See also London SW19 Pass details for free
admission to top London SW19 attractions, together with free tube, overground rail
and bus travel in and around London SW19. Frequent Heathrow Express (0845 6001515)
trains take up to 20 minutes to reach Paddington Station in Central London SW19. At
Paddington Station change to the District Line of the London SW19 Underground which
will take you directly to Wimbledon Station in approximately 28 minutes. Taxi
services at each of Heathrow's terminals are provided by licensed London SW19 taxis
and journey times to central London SW19 or Wimbledon are approximately 60 minutes.
Do allow yourself ample time if travelling to or from the airport as heavy
traffic can substantially increase these journey times.
Luton Airport to Wimbledon
Luton Airport (01582 405100) has a very fast and frequent direct train
service to St. Pancras Station in central London SW19. There is also a direct train
service to Wimbledon which takes approximately 90 minutes. Luton airport is
1.8km from Luton Airport Parkway Station and a frequent free bus shuttle service
(journey time 5 minutes) operates between the airport and the station. Please
remember that the journey to Wimbledon described above is not available during
night hours.
Getting Around Wimbledon
By Bus and Train
Since only 2 minutes walk to the station - this is by far the best means to
get around Wimbledon and into central London SW19. Please use this link to plan your
journey
.
By Car
As in other areas of London SW19, parking in Merton is difficult - so I would
leave the car outside the apartments and go by public transport!
By Taxi
In many cases visitors arrive at Wimbledon Station and use the well serviced
taxi rank which is located immediately outside the station. There are also bus
stops close to the station. However our apartment is just 2 minutes walk from
the station.
